In my experience in healthcare IT, I’ve seen how some leaders truly engage while others just hold a title.

True leadership isn’t about a position. It’s about showing up, connecting, and supporting your team.

Reflecting on my journey, I share insights on the difference between leaders who empower and those who simply manage.

Here are 3 key actions to become a more effective leader:

✅Be Present and Proactive: Engage with your team consistently, not just during smooth times.

✅Empower Rather than Control: Trust your team’s expertise. Delegation and support lead to growth.

✅Listen and Act on Feedback: Show your team their input matters by actively listening and adapting.

We all have blind spots, ironically named because we rarely recognize them. These hidden biases can impact various aspects of our lives, from our relationships with family and friends to our professional interactions and even our political views. Regardless of our backgrounds or beliefs, acknowledging that we all have these blind spots is essential for personal growth and improved communication.

I’ve learned that blind spots can really affect my decision-making. They often lead me to jump to conclusions, which can result in significant setbacks. Learning to navigate these blind spots has been crucial for my growth and effectiveness as a leader.

What Are Blind Spots?

Blind spots are the biases, assumptions, or limitations in my perspective that prevent me from seeing the whole picture. They often come from my experiences, what I prefer, or just what I think I know. For example, early in my career, I worked on a team tasked with implementing an electronic health record (EHR) system. I assumed everyone was on board with the new system simply because they hadn’t voiced any concerns. I only figured out my blind spot when we hit some bumps during training sessions. This experience taught me that my assumptions could be blind spots that hinder communication and progress.

The Dangers of Jumping to Conclusions

Jumping to conclusions without really looking into things can cause some serious issues. For example, during a recent merger and acquisition project, I thought I could use the same strategy that had worked great with a previous implementation. But I didn’t take the time to analyze the new organization’s culture and dynamics. Instead of consulting everyone involved or considering the unique challenges we were facing, I just went with what I knew.

When we hit unexpected resistance and setbacks during integration, it quickly became clear that I had overlooked some key insights and the different needs of the new team. This experience really drove home how important critical thinking is and how dangerous it can be to let blind spots guide my decisions.

Identifying and Addressing Blind Spots

To improve my decision-making and overcome blind spots, I’ve implemented several strategies:

Foster Open Communication: I try to create a space where my team feels comfortable sharing their thoughts and concerns. I really value others perspectives because different viewpoints can help me see things I might miss. For example, during our EHR project, I started holding regular feedback sessions to make sure everyone had a chance to chime in.

Practice Active Listening:Instead of simply waiting for my turn to speak, I have learned to truly focus on listening. This engagement fosters trust and allows me to gather valuable insights while identifying potential blind spots in my understanding.

Utilize Data-Driven Decision-Making: I’ve learned the hard way how crucial it is to let data guide my decisions. After the EHR implementation experience, I realized that diving into relevant performance metrics and getting feedback from my team is essential before making any big changes. Analytics isn’t just a nice-to-have; it helps me make smarter, more informed choices that really drive results.

Conduct Regular Reflection Sessions: I take some time to think back on recent decisions. By looking at the outcomes, I can spot patterns in my thinking and see if any blind spots led to mistakes. But I have to watch out for this because there’s a fine line between reflecting and getting stuck in analysis paralysis, where overthinking just slows me down instead of helping me move forward.

Reflective Questions for Identifying Blind Spots

On my leadership journey, I’ve found that asking the right questions can really help me recognize my blind spots. Here are some reflective questions to challenge your thinking and promote growth:

What assumptions am I making?

Who is not being heard?

What patterns do I see in my decision-making?

How do my emotions influence my decisions?

What feedback have I received, and how have I responded to it?

How can I apply critical thinking to my decision-making process to better identify potential blind spots?

Wrapping Up

Recognizing and addressing blind spots is essential for effective leadership. By acknowledging the risks associated with jumping to conclusions and implementing strategies to enhance critical thinking, we can make more informed decisions that benefit my team and projects. The journey of becoming a better leader is ongoing, requiring constant self-reflection and openness to feedback.

If you’re looking to enhance your decision-making skills and tackle your blind spots, I invite you to explore the Maxwell DISC assessment. Understanding your communication and leadership styles can provide valuable insights into your blind spots and improve your team dynamics.

As leaders, stress and frustration can sometimes dictate our responses, impacting our effectiveness and team dynamics. In my latest article, I explore how emotional intelligence has transformed my leadership approach.

Here are three key takeaways:

✅ Emotional Intelligence is Essential: It allows us to manage our emotions and build trust within our teams.
